The LOR Foundation in coordination with the Lander Senior Center is presenting “Swingin’ Fridays” beginning on Friday, September 20 at 7 PM.

The jazz ensemble, WyoJazz will be performing Swing Era music for the dances at the Senior Center the third Friday of each month. The dances are open to all ages and refreshments will be provided.

WyoJazz, the LOR Foundation, and Senior Center put the dances together seeing a need for swing dancing opportunities in the community. Kelly Dehnert, Director of WyoJazz, said, “The Swing Era had such great music.” The Dorsey brothers, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington were household names then. Dehnert explained there is very little of that around here and that gave them the idea of putting together monthly dances.

Dehnert added that there has been a growing interest in the music of the Swing Era among young people for the last several years. He said WyoJazz will be performing tunes like “Almost Like Being in Love,” “How High the Moon,” “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” and “Fly Me To the Moon” among many other popular favorites.

“I am hoping we will have both young and old come and enjoy the music even if they are unsure of how to dance to the style.” He explained that there are several people in the community who are good teachers of swing dancing and will be happy to help new “swingers.”

LOR is generously providing the funding necessary to put together this high-quality community event and Jane Nolde at the Senior Center is doing all she can to accommodate the dances at the Center.
