[Rivertontalk] The outdoor tomato survived! Yours can too.

Hello all,

To put our "money where are mouth is" we planted a tomato seedling inside
of a Water Cage about 3 weeks ago. I didn't think that it stood a chance
of survival, but what the heck. I wanted to push the envelope and see how
good the Water Cage really is, and where it's limitations are.

So I planted that poor, doomed little tomato (silver fir tree variety,
heritage plant), and set the Water Cage over it. When I did the evening
chores about a week ago and there was already frost on the ground, I
figured that was it for my little plant. The next morning it was 20
degrees F outside, and when I went to check on my experiment, the water
cage was frozen solid. Not just slushy, but it made that hard knocking
noise when I tapped on it. So, that was curtains for the tomato
seedling... well not exactly. It was still green. I thought that maybe it
was just well persevered. When I got home from work that evening, it was
still green. Now over a week later it is not only green, but growing
taller than all of it's siblings which are still indoors.

The wind yesterday rolled my wheelbarrow across the property, swept any
loose hay out of all of my animal pens, untarped the wood pile, and
had absolutely no effect on my Water Cage. The weather web site said 60
MPH winds, and the Water Cage did not budge. It did not fall over and
crush my plant, or do any of the other annoying things that those other
protective devices do. I feel so much more confident selling the Water
Cage now. It has lived up to all of the manufacturers promises.

I am not saying that my plant is going to make it to the time that sane
people put their tomatoes and peppers in the ground. I will readily admit
that I am pushing my luck rather severely, but I will say that if you plant
a month early with a Water Cage, your odds are very good that you will get
an early and plentiful harvest. For $6.00 each, you can't afford not to.

We will be giving away two Water Cages and some home made soap at the
Barnyards & Backyards show in Lander on April 13th and 14th. We will also
have some copies of "The All New Square Foot Gardening" for sale as well as
some free stuff about greywater re-use. Come by and talk gardening with
us.

Contact us if you want a copy of our brochure. We have plenty of Cages in
stock in Lander right now, so we will happily fill your order as well.
