[Rivertontalk] Vance Countryman's Comment Regarding County Attorney Race

I have been following the campaign for the County Attorney’s Office. On
multiple occasions, pettiness rears its head from the LeBrun/Oakley
campaign. Recently, Mr. LeBrun was critical of Mr. Bennett's decision to
hire Robert Rose. It’s ironic that Mr. LeBrun would make such a statement
given Mr. Rose has practiced law in the State of Wyoming more than twice as
long as Mr. LeBrun. He worked in the prosecutor's office in Campbell County
in the 80’s; I think Mr. LeBrun would have been 11 or 12 at that time. Mr.
Rose was a part of the Spence, Moriarity and Schuster Law Firm and has
actively been a trial lawyer for more than three decades. Mr. Rose and his
father literally changed the law across this State in Mills v. Reynolds, 837
P.2d 48 (Wyo. 1992).

What is of greater note is the criticism that Mr. LeBrun spins because Mr.
Rose defended people in criminal cases. Mr. Rose represented the State of
Wyoming in criminal cases in one of the busiest criminal dockets in the
State. The comment is both ironic and hypocritical. Mr. LeBrun himself
worked as a criminal defense attorney in Natrona County before he came to
Fremont County. Contrary to Mr. LeBrun's political comment that too much
money is being spent to employ Mr. Rose, Mr. LeBrun should have commented
about how lucky Fremont County is to have Mr. Rose representing its
interests.

The LeBrun/Oakley campaign continues to take license with issues not germane
to the Fremont County Attorney’s office rather than discussing Mr. LeBrun’s
qualifications and vision. Criminal prosecution is an important part of the
job but the County Attorney’s Office is responsible for much more. It gives
advice to the County Commissioners, represents the County in Civil matters,
and addresses personnel issues within the County as well as serving as the
lead law enforcement officer in the County. It would be helpful if Mr.
LeBrun would set out his experience in these other matters as well, which as
far as I can tell, he has not.

I am truly disappointed that either Mr. LeBrun feels free to take cheap
shots or simply doesn't do his research. In either event both are
unacceptable.
